Choosing Materials That Last: Countertops, Flooring, and Tile

A guide to selecting durable, long-lasting materials for kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects in Massachusetts.

Material selection has a direct impact on how a remodeling project looks, performs, and holds up over time. Choosing materials that balance aesthetics with durability ensures your renovation delivers value long after the project is complete.

Countertops are one of the most visible and most-used surfaces in any kitchen or bathroom. Quartz has become the most popular choice for a reason — it's non-porous, scratch-resistant, and available in a wide range of colors and patterns. Granite remains a strong option for homeowners who prefer natural stone, though it requires periodic sealing. Marble offers a distinct aesthetic but is more susceptible to staining and etching, making it better suited for bathrooms or low-traffic kitchen areas. Butcher block provides warmth and a natural feel, but requires regular maintenance.

Flooring choices should account for the room's moisture exposure and traffic level. In kitchens and bathrooms, porcelain tile and luxury vinyl plank are the most reliable performers — both resist moisture and wear while offering a wide range of styles. Engineered hardwood works well in kitchens but should be used cautiously in bathrooms. In basements, moisture-resistant options like LVP and porcelain tile are strongly preferred over hardwood or carpet.

Tile for shower surrounds and accent walls should be selected with both aesthetics and maintenance in mind. Large-format tiles reduce grout lines and simplify cleaning. Porcelain tile offers superior durability compared to ceramic in wet environments. Natural stone tiles are beautiful but require sealing and more careful maintenance.

At RD Horizon Builders, we help homeowners navigate material decisions with practical recommendations based on how each surface will actually be used in their home.
